Trinity Explorers (ages 14–18)

Trinity is our local Explorer Scout Unit for 14–18 year olds, partnered with Stroud Valley Scout Group.

Explorers take the adventure to the next level — with more say in what they do, more independence and bigger challenges, supported by experienced adult volunteers.

How Trinity Explorers fits with Stroud Valley

Explorer Units are part of the Stroud & Tetbury Scout District, not directly part of Stroud Valley Scout Group. Trinity is an Explorer Unit that:

  • is run by many of the same leaders who volunteer at Stroud Valley
  • meets at the same Scout Centre as Beavers, Cubs and Scouts
  • works in partnership with our Group to make moving on feel smooth and familiar

For young people moving up from Scouts, it feels like a natural next step — new name, new opportunities, but lots of familiar faces.

What do Explorers do?

Explorers shape much of their own programme, supported by their leaders. Over the year, they might get involved in:

  • camps and expeditions, including District and county events
  • hikes, navigation and outdoor challenges
  • adventure activities such as climbing, water sports or shooting (where available)
  • Young Leader volunteering in Beaver, Cub or Scout sections
  • community projects, fundraising and helping others
  • working towards top awards like the Chief Scout’s Platinum and Diamond and the King’s Scout Award
  • taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE)

Many larger events — such as camps and day trips — are organised by the District and open to Explorers from all Units across Stroud & Tetbury.

The Young Leaders’ Scheme

We really encourage all our Explorers to take part in the Young Leaders’ Scheme. It helps young people:

  • develop leadership skills
  • support younger sections like Beavers, Cubs or Scouts
  • build confidence and communication skills
  • learn how meetings and activities are planned and delivered
  • work towards recognised awards and certificates

Young Leaders play a huge part in keeping our Group running, and it’s a brilliant way to gain experience that helps with school, college, apprenticeships and future volunteering.

When and where we meet

  • Day: Wednesday
  • Time: 7:15pm – 9:15pm
  • Place: Stroud Valley Scout & Community Centre, Chapel Street, Stroud

Explorers can join from Scouts or from outside Scouting. If your young person is new to Scouting, the leaders will help them settle in and get to know the Unit.

Costs, uniform and support

We want Explorers to be accessible to as many young people as possible.

  • Subs and payments: Subs help cover programme costs, badges, hall costs and insurance. Some larger events and District camps may have separate fees.
  • Uniform: Explorers usually wear a beige Explorer shirt and a necker (often the Stroud & Tetbury District necker, or by agreement with the Unit).
  • Keeping it affordable: If cost is ever a barrier — for subs, uniform, camps or events — please talk to us or the Explorer leaders in confidence.

Full details about subs, how to pay, uniform and financial support are on our Parent Information page.

Moving on from Scouts to Explorers

Most young people join Trinity Explorers from Scouts at around 14 (or just before). We keep the move as smooth as possible by:

  • planning joint activities between Scouts and Explorers
  • inviting older Scouts to visit Trinity nights
  • explaining how District-run events work

If your young person is in Scouts and thinking about Explorers, please speak to their Scout leader or contact the Trinity leaders for more information.

What happens after Explorers?

When young people turn 18, there are lots of ways to stay part of Scouting — and we especially encourage Explorers who have grown up in Stroud Valley to come back as adult volunteers.

  • Become an adult volunteer with Stroud Valley Scouts
  • Support camps, events or adventures on a flexible basis
  • Join Scout Network (18–25 years) for even bigger opportunities
  • Continue with Duke of Edinburgh’s Award or take on leadership roles

Ready to join Trinity Explorers?

If your young person would like to join Trinity Explorers or move up from Scouts, please use our online Join & Volunteer form and select Explorers. The leaders will then get in touch with more information.
