Adult Volunteering

Our adult volunteers make Scouting happen at Stroud Valley. Whether you can help every week, once a month, or just now and again, there’s a place for you on our team — and you don’t need to have been a Scout before.

We’ll support you with training, ideas and a friendly team, so you can start small and build confidence as you go.

Why volunteer with Stroud Valley Scouts?

Volunteering is good for the young people you support, and it’s good for you too.

  • Make a difference locally by helping young people gain skills for life and grow in confidence
  • Support your wellbeing through connection, purpose and time away from screens
  • Be part of a welcoming community and a worldwide movement
  • Share and learn new skills, from teamwork and leadership to outdoor activities
  • Have fun by joining in with games, activities, camps and events, not just organising them

Flexible ways to volunteer

We know everyone’s life looks different, so there are lots of ways to help, from regular roles to one-off support.

Section volunteers

Help run Beavers, Cubs, Scouts or Explorers on a regular basis as part of a team.

  • Typically 1–2 hours per week during term time
  • Great if you enjoy working with young people
  • Shared planning and support from other leaders

Occasional helpers

Dip in when you can, ideal if your schedule changes or you can’t commit weekly.

  • Support camps, hikes and nights away
  • Help with activities, set-up and events
  • Extra hands during busy periods

Behind-the-scenes roles

Help with the “everything else” that makes Scouting possible.

  • Fundraising, admin and communications
  • Trustee and group support roles
  • Organisation, planning and coordination

Project support

Help with one-off projects such as refurbishments, site improvements or major events.

  • Practical help such as DIY, maintenance and repairs
  • Skills-based volunteering including IT, design and photography
  • Time-limited help with a clear outcome

We’ll chat with you about how much time you can offer and find a role that fits.

Good for your wellbeing

Spending time outdoors, connecting with others and doing something meaningful can be great for mental health. Many volunteers tell us they feel more connected locally, more confident, and glad to have something positive in their week.

You’ll be part of a supportive team and get chances to spend more time outside, not just in front of a screen.

Skills for work, study and your CV

Volunteering is a great way to build transferable skills that employers and training providers value.

  • Communication and confidence
  • Teamwork and leadership
  • Planning and organisation
  • Problem solving and decision making
  • Safeguarding awareness and responsibility

Many volunteers say Scouts helped them grow useful skills for work or study, and we’re happy to provide references where appropriate to recognise the commitment you’ve shown.

Adventure for adults too

Volunteering isn’t just paperwork and planning. You can get involved in the fun stuff as well.

  • Join in with camps, hikes and nights away
  • Try adventurous activities alongside young people
  • Learn outdoor skills and leadership techniques
  • Take part in community projects and events

Section leaders and regular helpers don’t pay for section events, activities or nights away that they’re supporting.

Training and support

You won’t be thrown in at the deep end. New volunteers receive a friendly welcome, essential safeguarding information, and access to training through short online and in-person modules.

You’ll be part of a team, never left alone to manage everything, and there’s support from other leaders and the wider District.

Who can volunteer?

Anyone aged 18 or over can volunteer with us, whatever your background or experience. We welcome people of all identities and abilities and will do our best to adapt roles so you can take part.

All regular volunteers complete safer recruitment checks, including references and a disclosure check where required, so that we can keep young people safe.

Ready to find out more?

The quickest way to get involved is to browse our current volunteer vacancies and apply through the official Scouts system.

If you don’t see the right role listed or you’re not sure what you’d like to do yet, you can still register your interest and we’ll help find a way for you to get involved.
