Scouts (ages 10½–14)

Scouts is for young people aged 10½–14 who are ready for bigger adventures, more independence and new challenges with friends.

They build skills for life through outdoor activities, camps, trips and projects that help them grow in confidence, resilience and leadership.

What do Scouts do?

Scouts get the chance to try a huge range of activities, indoors and outdoors. Over the year, the programme might include:

  • Camping, expeditions and nights away
  • Hikes, navigation and exploring the local area
  • Campfires, backwoods cooking and survival skills
  • Climbing, water activities and adventure sports (where available)
  • Team challenges, problem solving and leadership opportunities
  • Community projects and helping others
  • Working towards activity badges and Challenge Awards

Scouts can earn a wide range of badges and awards, including the Chief Scout’s Gold Award, by taking part, supporting others and trying their best.

When and where we meet

  • Day: Thursday
  • Time: 7:15pm – 9:00pm
  • Place: Stroud Valley Scout & Community Centre, Chapel Street, Stroud

Young people usually join Scouts from Cubs or from our waiting list. If your child is new to Scouting, we’ll help them settle in and get to know the troop.

Costs, uniform and support

We want Scouts to be open and accessible to as many young people as possible.

  • Subs and payments: Subs help cover programme materials, badges, hall costs and insurance.
  • Uniform: Scouts usually wear a teal Scout shirt or polo, along with our group necker.
  • Keeping it affordable: If cost is ever a barrier — for subs, camps, events or uniform — please talk to us in confidence.

Full details about subs, how to pay, uniform and the financial support we can offer are on our Parent Information page.

Moving on to Explorers

When Scouts reach 14 (or are nearly 14), they get ready to move up to Explorers (14–18 years).

We help make this an exciting next step — with joint activities, visits to Explorer units and time to find out what’s on offer locally.
